Reggae artiste Etana has become the fourth woman in history to be nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Reggae Album category.

In the announcements that were made this morning, Etana was the sole female nominee on the list which included Ziggy Marley, Protégé, Black Uhuru and Sting and Shaggy.

This nomination will see the soulful singer sealing a place in history as she becomes the first female to be nominated in the category in more than 20 years.

The last female to cop one of the five coveted nomination spots was Sister Carol. She was nominated in 1997 for her album, Lyrically Potent. No female has ever won the Reggae Grammy.

In a statement released to the media following the Grammy announcements, an elated Etana thanked her team for helping her put together a Grammy-worthy album.

Fellow artistes Gramps Morgan and Tarrus Riley were among to whom she sent heartfelt gratitude.

She thanked Morgan for his advice on song order and Riley for always pushing her to ‘sing out’.

“Tarrus Riley, when I first started in music, he would always say why do you have your voice and don’t want to use it? Sing out! You have it! Sing! He is always there coaching me along,” she said.

She also thanked popular promoter Heavy D, publicist Keona Williams and her mother and other relatives.

“I’m too grateful to my mother, other family members and relatives who’s been there through it all. I couldn’t have done it all without Andre Morris because when I had any kind a doubt, you always knew,” she said. “I’m grateful to find people who are truly passionate about reggae music ... This Grammy nomination made me the first female in almost 20 years to be nominated. Honoured and deeply grateful. Perfect love.”
