Spice pays homage to 90s dancehall through Sumfest set

July 20, 2019

Internationally acclaimed artiste, Spice proved once again why she is the undisputed Queen of dancehall. She made her 2019 Reggae Sumfest entrance by popping out of a made-to-fit sound box singing her popular hit, Romantic Mood.

Props filled the stage as her dancers were wheeled in on handcarts that were painted in the Jamaican colours. The 90s dancehall scene reigned supreme as her setup included a jerk pan, sweetie vendors and boom boxes.

"The idea was birthed from Romantic Mood. That is one of my hit songs that everybody love. They love the concept and my international fans love it as well," Spice later told The STAR.

"It is one of my favourites too because that is what I grew up on. When I was younger that is what my father used to listen to. I always say Professor Nuts is one of my favourite artistes and people always wonder, but that's what my father used to blast in my ears all the time. I grew up on that kinda old school dancehall and so I love it," Spice said.

Speaking about her set and the different props used, Spice said she always thinks about things that would surprise her audience.

"A lot of people thought I would come out in a fridge because Cool It is one of my biggest hit songs but I could never do that because they would have expected it," she said.

"Because of the old school theme, that era of dancehall was all about the black speaker boxes, the jerk pan, the handcart, the old school radio. So I said it would be good if I represented it by coming out of a speaker box. People don't understand that listeners love 80s and 90s dancehall music. It is embedded in them. They can't get enough of it and so for my fans that appreciate authentic dancehall, I did it for them," Spice added.
