Gospel Spotlight: ‘Naughty’ playwright David Tulloch doing gospel

September 20, 2019

Last year, award-winning playwright and CEO of Probemaster Productions, David Tulloch, shook up the local theatre world with ‘ Sugar Daddy’, a play of profanity, nudity and strong sexual content.

This year, the thespian has made an about face and is now spreading the gospel.

Instead of spreading legs, lashing tongues and squeezing flesh, Tulloch is wrapped up in the love of the Lord – as his future stage productions and new music career will show.

How did Tulloch get from directing a fully nude, screaming woman to run through his audience to teaching the Word? He said a couple of things happened.

“After I did the last show, I decided to go in a positive direction, do nicer, cleaner stuff,” Tulloch told THE WEEKEND STAR.

He even started going to church more often.

“Not that I saw anything wrong with what we were doing. However, society may not perceive it like that. I just wanted to do shows that glorify a more spiritual lifestyle. I thought that would be a better walk for me,” he said.

According to Tulloch, the biggest takeaway from Sugar Daddy was that the audience felt like a fly on the wall.

He said: “It was lewd, but life happens like that. It’s not that you’re purporting a lifestyle, but it should be real. And I thought I was on to something, and a higher calling just stepped in.”

After Sugar Daddy had its run at the theatre, the playwright shared that he was approached by a pastor to direct a play for his church.

It was a curious development for Tulloch, who was reeling from the success of the sexual production.

Pit To Pulpit opened on August 1, and was expected to run for that month. But the production snowballed – and the cast, including Tulloch, is billed for benefit performances into November.

Based on demand so far, he predicts the curtain will close near Boxing Day. His faith-based theatrical gigs won’t stop here.

Tulloch shared that there has been a steady trend in projects, divulging that he has been asked to direct a number of other faith-based productions.

He’s already committed to direct and appear in The Amazing Grace Stage Play (from November 8 to 10) for Kaleo Productions, a Canadian gospel production company.

He also mentioned a third production, scheduled to premiere in December. Tulloch is also celebrating the release of his first gospel song, Suffer The Loss.

“Before plays, I was into music. For the Actor Boys, I actually prefer the awards for music,” he revealed.

Still devoted to his identity, Tulloch’s musical stage name is The Probemaster. He said that he’s always been in music, but the variables were never really right.

“Now that I’m somewhere more or less comfortable in theatre, why not go back and give music a fair chance? Also, why not keep it Christian?” he said.

Suffer The Loss was released on August 17, and the revitalised performer reports favourable responses. Still, he’s biding his time before stepping out on stage as a singer.

“Some people have reached out, but I’m not ready for shows. We have other songs already done. But some people are saying don’t go with a second single – just come with the EP! And I have enough for it,” he said.
