I actually have talent - Aspiring artiste Dpro Totype defends Goth look, says shock value already working for him
Over the years, several aspiring dancehall artistes have sought to use shock value entertainment to weave their way into the industry.
There was Alkaline (with the 'tattooed' eyeballs), Furtyle Brain (who sported devil horns) and Linguiss (who proclaimed himself the saviour of dancehall complete with a Jesus-esque robe and all).
With the exception of Alkaline, the careers of the others have been short-lived. Still, that has not stopped the newest dancehall act, Dpro Totype, from taking his shot at fame.
With his look very similar to that of the 'night walkers' from the famous television series Game of Thrones, the entertainer told THE STAR that he has real talent and is ready to dominate the dancehall space.
"I've been a ghostwriter for many years for a lot of established acts and to step out as an artiste is not an easy thing. Nuh matter the talent that yuh have, to grab the attention of the people, yuh affi go the extra mile," he said. "The difference between me and all the others before me that have tried this image thing is that I actually have talent. Aside from Alkaline, the rest of dem was wannabe artistes. Dem never have no talent, dem was just seeking attention."
"For me this is about more than seeking attention, it is about proving to people that I'm one of a kind. That's what the name Dpro Totype means. Everything about me is unique and I'm definitely coming to make an impact," he continued.
So much attention
Speaking of making an impact, the recording artiste says he's already garnered so much attention that well established producers have been sending him rhythms hoping he will voice for them.
"This was a strategic move by my team and I and it's definitely working. So many people have been getting in contact with me trying to find out more about the image and a lot of producers are reaching out sending me rhythms and asking me to voice because they recognise that I have a lot to offer," he said. "We wanted to ensure that aside from the image, substance was there, and now that we have the people's attention, we can feed the people the music and let that now speak for itself. I know I will last because my music is good."
The artiste, who is currently promoting his single Day One Friend, says that based on his image, people expect him to spew violence and Goth-like messages.
But he wants people to know he'll be doing the opposite.
"I'm an oxymoron and all this is part of my intellectual creativity. People will pay attention because of the image and then when they listen to the music they're surprised because it's not what they expected," he said. "They're anticipating foolishness or some demonic thing but what they'll get is substance and positive vibrations."
