As the global death toll to COVID-19 exceeds 169,000 persons, countries are left to figure out how they can lessen their numbers. And there are individuals who are convinced the numbers are incorrect, one of whom, reggae entertainer Lutan Fyah says that "the death toll reported is weird".

"The situation overall is weird and the reason I don't think so many persons are dying from it is because I am not hearing that many persons, like an aunt, a friend, or relatives calling out about losing someone to the virus ... not sure if that accurate at all or if it's a scare tactic," he told THE STAR.

Lutan Fyah continued to share, "My doubts are not that the virus doesn't exist, I don't want anyone to interpret what I say to be something negative, but that the information being made available is not highlighting things that are important for people to know."

He also has been very vocal on social media, sharing his beliefs on matters, including comments made by French doctors that Africa would be the testing ground for the COVID-19 vaccine.

DEATH TOLL

Nearly 2.5 million people have been affected by the virus, which causes respiratory illness worldwide, and in excess of 169,000 have died. The United States have recorded more than 41,800 deaths in the past few weeks, making it the most affected territory. Jamaica has had six COVID-19 deaths.

There have been suggestions that coronavirus could be understated worldwide due to a lack of testing.

Despite not being convinced about the number of people dying as a result of COVID-19, Lutan Fyah is convinced that the novel coronavirus is not to taken lightly. He is advising Jamaicans to play their part in containing its spread.

"Take for instance, this social distancing, there are still many offices open where workers are close together in a space as normal," the Crab Inna Barrel singer noted. "There are so many things we should be aware of but not much attention is given. I for one, have been taking the necessary precautionary measures for myself and my family and people around me."

Lutan Fyah is based in Portmore, St Catherine, which has been under a lockdown since last Wednesday. He said that he trusts that the Government will make the right decision to prevent any further spread of COVID-19, "and if it means putting the whole island on quarantine and lockdown it is up to the Government and prime minister to act".

"I am worried for the people but more so our children across the world. When it's time to go back to school, what [are] they going to implement, especially as it concerns vaccination, and just regulating how things will work?"
