Alicia Taylor talks to the Creator with ‘Dear God’

June 05, 2020

Psalm 34 verse 19 says: "'The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all."

A few years ago, gospel singer Alicia Taylor was pressed by many issues. As a way of coping and as a personal cry-out to God, the 31-year-old started writing letters to God.

Not only was she delivered from many of the burdens she bore, but the letters marked the beginning of what is now her debut EP.

Aptly titled Dear God, the EP features five tracks and sees Taylor addressing issues such as fear and insecurity.

"The EP is really just one letter addressing a series of issues and some of the things that I was struggling with. I was just really explaining to God in the letter what my fears were and saying to him, 'You need to take this away from me. Help me through these things otherwise I feel like I'm going to die'," she said. "Even looking around at people and seeing what they were facing, I was saying, 'God, I can't really see you or feel you, and there is a lot going on, so what exactly is going on God'?"

She admitted that the process was really hard, and she would sometimes stay up and struggle with writing certain things.

"I remember I wrote one of the songs, and it was almost like a harsh letter to Him (God), and I had to crush it up and go again, but the process was really healing for me," she said.

The EP, set to drop Saturday, will be available on all digital platforms. Taylor said that more important than getting sales support is the hope that the compilation blesses and encourages people to listen.

Honesty

"When people listen to this EP, I want them to get the message of honesty, about how important it is to be honest with yourself and be honest with God about what you're going through because He is very much concerned about us and what we face. He's going to sit down and listen to you, and He's going to get you out of the situation you're in," she said. "With the pandemic going on, the compilation is perfect for this season for persons to understand there is a loving God who is with us."
