Koffee eyes more Grammys - Working on full-length project

In January, reggae's newest sensation, Koffee, made history when she became the first female artiste to win the Grammy award for Best Reggae Album.

What made the accomplishment an even bigger deal was the fact that the then 19-year-old won the award with a six-track EP and not the customary full-length album.

Her win stirred up conversation regarding what constitutes a 'full' album and what makes the compilation eligible for Grammy consideration.

Though no one can take away her Grammy win, or undo the bit of history that came along with it, Koffee may be looking to solidify her Grammy-winning ways with a new full-length project.

The biggest thing

Speaking with THE WEEKEND STAR following her performance at the virtual staging of Reggae Sumfest, the Toast singer revealed that she is working on her album now.

"I am doing a little camp right now, that's just me and some musicians and producers and a few artistes. We just a build a vibes, seeing where that vibe takes us, and hopefully we create magic. The biggest thing for me right now is this album. Of course, I'll be releasing singles in-between to kinda keep the pace a little, but the album is really where my focus is right now," she said

When quizzed about her Grammy aspirations with this project, the pint-sized singer declared "it a go be problem, me a tell yuh straight".

She did not give a timeline on the album's release date or if she is hoping to finish it in time to make the nominations for next year's awards.

Koffee said she intends to continue making her mark on the international music scene. She expressed that whenever she accomplishes greatness, it's not just herself and her immediate circle that celebrate.

"I feel very honoured as a young person from Jamaica to bring positivity and light to the world. I want to make people feel collectively and individually proud. When I walked on stage and collected the Grammy award and said 'this one is for all of us. This one is for reggae. This one is for Jamaica', I meant it."

Koffee once again created history last week when her latest track, Lockdown, raced to the million views mark on YouTube in 48 hours.

The feat made her the first reggae artiste to get to the coveted mark on the streaming platform in such a short space of time. The song, which is still trending in Jamaica a week after its release, has now surpassed the five million views mark.

Koffee said that although she is surprised by the song's success, she is excited to see how much more it will accomplish.

"I'm kinda surprised but in a good way because Lockdown was just a likkle song me decide me a go put out inna da time here because what else were we doing? It really a spin and me know me a go reap even more success from it. From the reaction from everybody across the world, I have a lot of hope and I am really excited to see what's next," she said.
