Dancehall artistes Mavado and Popcaan have been at odds for a number of years, but fans are hoping they are headed for reconciliation.

This, after Popcaan revealed in a recent interview that he'd be willing to let bygones be bygones for the sake of the culture.

Speaking with US reporters for the talk show Ebro in the Morning last week, the 'Unruly Boss' responded to a question on whether or not he and the 'Gully Gad' could get back to a 'better' space .

"I don't know about everybody but with me, I'm always willing to make the best move for the music and for the culture. I will put my ego aside and just do it for the culture but not everybody think like that and so I mean I just play my part at the end of the day and always try to tell them (his colleagues) that the unity in the music will bring more light to it. If they don't want to take my advice then fine, I'll just do what I do," he said.

Popcaan's response has since been labelled by many social media users as a sign of true maturity. Many who left comments under the video of the interview on YouTube, lauded the Firm and Strong deejay for pushing positivity especially on an international platform. Others, however, were not immediately convinced.

But former Gaza labelmate, Lisa Hyper, said that as a man of his word, Popcaan would not have made those comments if burying the hatchet for the greater good was not something he would be willing to do. "I think people should take his word for it. Popcaan is a really playful innu weh nuh really take anything too serious but him music," she said. "Unity is what the industry is lacking and so if Popcaan has chosen to contribute to the unity of the industry then that is great and he deserves to be commended."

12-year hatchet

Hyper, who recently buried a 12-year hatchet between herself and dancehall queen Spice, added that if a reconciliation were to materialise, it would only spell good for dancehall music.

"We all know what unity brings innu. It's just that some a we relentless, stubborn and egotistical but we all know the greatness of unity and we all know how a lack of unity is affecting our culture," she said. "A because we lack unity why the industry nuh really reach weh it fi reach. If we can get together more and really join forces, it would be better for all of us."

Dancehall industry stalwart and artiste manager Heavy D agreed with Lisa Hyper.

"Somebody always a try tear down somebody and it woulda good if we could make more peace because dat woulda good for everybody," he said. "Popcaan a grow now and him a become a businessman and so him understand the industry more and is acting accordingly. Popcaan gone over 10 years in the business now and so him mature and a pree things differently."

Heavy D noted that Mavado and Vybz Kartel had "the biggest war in a dancehall" and yet they called a truce, so he sees Mavado possibly also extending an olive branch to Popcaan.

"It's possible to call a truce here too where they will maybe not be friends, but not enemies either. Is not like him and Popcaan did have anything big," he said.
