Music is the window to the soul and laying all of hers on new tracks is up-and-coming artiste Scrushelle.

"Scrush is an intellectual 'gangsta'; a combination of beauty, brains and badness," she told STAR on the Rise. Always musically inclined, she took a liking to being introduced to instruments. By high school, she had taught herself to play the keyboard. Fuse that with her love for writing poetry and stories, and everything aligned by fate. But it took uniting with a long-lost cousin to ignite her passion.

"At age 16, while attending St Catherine High School, I began going to the studio with her and assisted her with writing a few songs. That's when I discovered the potential to do this myself," she said. However, Scrushelle first embarked on a thriving career in the culinary industry as a chef and caterer.

But based on her love for words and creative expression, she realised there was no escaping the beats all around her. So she put pen to paper and hit the studio any chance she could.

Years later, after honing her craft, she decided to create her first single, Boom Bam.

"Released by the awesome Jazzy Kit in September or October of last year, that has been awesome sauce!" she said. The single organically accelerated its way up to RapCaviar (a playlist on Spotify). This, she believes, is proof that people like it and it has been picking up traction.

"It has been doing well so far. Big up (DJ) Bruce Lee, because the day after Boom Bam dropped, he has had that song on repeat from then til now," she said.

Her second single, Secret Crush, showcases a softer and smoother side to Scrushelle. The response, she says, has also been doing exceptionally well.

Most people were surprised by her switch in sound from her first track, and she grew a bit concerned about the critique because people were putting her in a box and expecting just one version when she is all about versatility. "As time passes, they will appreciate that I have range," she confidently added.

Motivated by life and its experiences, Scrushelle argues that because women are often being neglected by their spouses and do not receive ample attention, for various reasons, she was inspired to write these songs and return her 'sisters' to the spotlight.

"I'm ringing the bell for these men as a reminder that they have someone good in your lives; she is hot and sexy, so don't forget that," she added.
