Growing up in an environment that was often disturbed by violence was not easy, says Tajii Don, a recording artiste in the making hailing from Spanish Town.

The artiste, whose given name is Taj Desouza, comes from humble beginnings, where the values of kindness and consistency were always instilled.

"It was risky, but I made it this far without getting into any major trouble, just little things that little boys get in trouble for. I tried to keep a positive mindset and do right by me and my family," Tajii Don said. "Music was a life-changing choice; it was something else to focus on, aspire to, and that gave me an outlet for self-expression, which helped keep me out of trouble."

His dedication to music has already been recognised by international music producer Yusef 'Sef Millz' Alexander, who having taken a liking to Tajii Don's lyrical ability.

He and Andre Fletcher co-signed Tajii Don to their Pryme Inc label. Tajii Don told THE STAR that this "has been the most rewarding experience in my fairly new journey".

"They have worked relentlessly to take my career to the next level. We record non-stop, shoot videos regularly to keep content fresh. So it is safe to say that my sound and entire brand has elevated to an outstanding level with Pryme Inc. They have become like family," he added.

Sef Millz has worked with award-winning R&B, hip-hop and rap recording artistes such as T.I., Maino, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, and P Diddy throughout his career.

He is also the producer behind the music used in Spike Lee's reboot of his original film, She's Gotta Have It, on Netflix.

Music is presently Tajii Don's main source of income, and has influenced him to take a closer look at digital streaming and sales rather than the hype.

He shared, "I am gaining fans from all over the world because of the pathway available through the Internet and digital music platforms."

He continued: "The sound people will hear from me is so different, though it's a mix between dancehall and rap, which several artistes are exploring. Working with someone like Sef Millz adds a foreign flavour to it overall. The beats aren't regular, and the music, inspired by life, is also from the heart."

He aims to earn a living from music and has had to overcome the physical challenges of improving voice projection and controlling his nerves.

Five months ago, Pryme Inc released Tajii Don's debut single, Panama, followed by Bad & Boasy and Mi Nuh Like People.

Now he's anticipating the premiere of his music video for his latest track, Flight, which features a somewhat improved delivery.

"People won't be able to forget my name; I know it suits my music and brand. We also have some major collaborations in the works right now, but I would like to record or work with entertainers like Koffee, Dexta Daps and Drake in the future. For now, I am finishing up my No Joke album," he said. "I'll continue earning a living to support my family while doing what I love, and hopefully help other people. There's a lot of young talent out there that need help. I want to try and help them, too."

Bet you didn't know: "I'm a great chef."

What is something you are great at cooking? "You name it, I can cook it. My father was a great cook, that's where it comes from. I acquired the knowledge and skill from him before he died."

If not music, what would you be doing?" I would take the route of becoming a professional chef."

If you had to choose between only having a cell phone or a car for the rest of your life, which would you choose? "The phone -- it is helpful promotional-wise."

Who is your hero, and why? "My mother, because she motivates me, and it is my wish to make her live the life of her dreams."
