With the dancehall music industry quickly moving from one trending theme to the next, up-and-coming recording artiste Di Trilla is making sure he is not left behind.

Where other artistes succumb to copying trends, Di Trilla engraves every type of genre and performance style into his music stating that he, "channels the delivery of a potent performer like Papa San, a lyrical framework likening to a Professor Nuts and the flow of a Vybz Kartel", without imitating these artistes.

The single that is presently adding fuel into his career is Big Bad Subaru, which has been garnering attention across the Caribbean and Latin America, where several Subaru societies have taken a liking to it. Members of the Cayman Islands-based Subie Nation were even featured in the music video.

"For me, it was about the love for my own Impreza and being determined to upgrade to a WRX," said the artiste, given name Matthew Bonfield.

More energy

The deejay is counting down the months left to complete his studies at University of the Commonwealth Caribbean, to secure a bachelor degree in marketing, so that he can put more energy into recording new music. Di Trilla has been working as a warehouse operator for the past five years, juggling shifts to support paying tuition and also his two-year-old son Mattino, who he says is his main motivation.

"To be honest, there was a time where I was ready to quit, I was demotivated. I was like, nuh bother with the music thing; I definitely wanted to do it, but everybody was on this aggressive, competitive route," he said. "Then it come een like a voice ask me one night if me really a go waste me talent and me say 'no man, I have to do this'."

Di Trilla, who celebrated his 30th birthday yesterday, said he owes much to the church where he developed his craft playing the drums and then deejaying the gospel.

With a strong Christian upbringing, he does not plan to disappoint his parents. "My parents are supportive even as they advise me to keep singing positive music. In taking time to build my catalogue, I am going for the entertaining, but more storytelling type of music, with a little bit of hardcore," he said.
