Give female producers a chance, says Geminiss

Under the guidance of producer Lesley Hayles, Shamaro Mason, who goes by the moniker Geminiss, is looking to break out in the industry through her music productions.

She is the founder of Gemini Management Records, which was originally launched to represent artistes in booking and promotion deals.

"Lesley does a lot of PR for me, so I guess you could say she has guided me. I started to learn the business and over time my understanding of production became more in depth," Geminiss told THE STAR. "Many people don't know it is a female behind the record label but I figure over time they will because in 2021, more female producers will emerge from out of the shadows." Geminiss said that while she has always loved music, she never thought she would be doing it professionally.

She said that she owes a lot to her mother Jennifer Mason, and grew up hearing her uncle Fabian East performing gospel music. Reggae singer Davari, who she has signed to her label, also inspired her to pursue music. Recording artistes like QQ and Ishentikal have done songs with her, but she wants acts like Sizzla, Bounty Killer and Govana "to see the work I am capable of".

Extended the call

She extended the call to include other female producers, "because 2020 was a rough year, we had more time to meditate on our ideas, focus on new talents and build the energy to push out. Females just need a fair chance".

Internationally, Gemniss is behind productions for artistes like Natanja (France) and her most recent collaboration was with Popeye All Style from Puerto Rico on his single Adicto. It was recorded on her latest production, Cash Count rhythm, which also features local up-and-coming acts Alkyda and Chen Chen, the first female she has recorded. She also awaits next month's release of a co-production with Ghetto Life Productions.

Geminiss is pleading with other females in the business"to be strong, stand firm and do what inspires you".

"Despite how rough the music industry is, developing a strong force can get everyone to the top. We ladies go through a lot but we will make a lot of difference in the music industry," she said.
