A ‘Royal Wedding’ like no other - Dewy and Queenie make it official

It was far from being your traditional wedding: No towering cake and no 'here comes the bride' song. However, as they have done throughout their relationship, Queenie Ladi Gangsta and her beau, Duwayne 'Dewy' Scarlett, on Saturday dispensed with the traditional script and said their 'I dos' during an eye-popping ceremony at Hellshire Beach in Portmore, St Catherine.

Queenie, 51, met Dewy, who is 20 years junior, on a visit to Jamaica last August. Dewy, who was a fan of the social media star, had sent her a message as an anxious fan asking if he could meet her in person, and that he was going to be her husband.

Queenie said that at first she merely saw him as just a fan, and even joked about his boldness with one of her friends. At the time, she said she was in Jamaica making preparations for her brother's funeral.

"Him text mi and say him a mi man and when mi finally see him, mi and mi fren start laugh and a say watch da mawga foot thread deh bout him a mi man. It wasn't like mi did want him or anything dem time deh," she said.

However, when the sparks began to fly weeks later, Queenie and Dewy became inseparable. Queenie, who calls the United Kingdom home, spent hours on the phone talking to her new beau. By this time, the couple had started posting each other on their social media pages, which resulted in hundreds of criticism by some of their followers who disapproved of their relationship. However, the couple remained unbothered. In October, Dewy popped the question via a telephone call, and for Queenie, that was a dream come true. When she returned to Jamaica, they went and purchased the engagement ring and he officially engaged her during one of their live videos.

Flocked by adoring fans

On Saturday's big day, Queenie was flocked by adoring fans soon after she arrived at the beachside in a Mercedes Benz motor car for her ceremony. Holding on to her body-hugging, white and silver wedding dress, she leaped out of the vehicle to interact with her supporters for a few seconds, before she was snatched away into a tight embrace by her groom Dewy. She then pranced down the sandy isle, patting herself as she danced to her newly-released single, June Plum, much to the delight of those around her.

Soon after, it was time for the formalities. The ceremony was presided over by Bishop Errol J. Wright, of the Hope and Mercy Ministry church, who encouraged them to live in love and be a good example to their children. He stated that he strongly believes the crime rate would be less if there were not so many broken homes and families.

Queenie was led down the isle by her younger brother, Andrew Espeut. Her nephew, Meleku Heron, served as ring bearer. Fellow dancehall artiste and close friend of the bride, D'Angel, was also present to witness the 'royal' ceremony.

Saturday's 'royal wedding' was the one Queenie dreamt of, and her emotions told the story after she became Mrs Scarlett.

"Am I crying? Wipe mi eye dem please," she said as tears of joy streamed and threatened to ruin her perfectly-set makeup.

The day was extra special for Dewy, as not only did he wed his soulmate, but he did so on his 31st birthday.

"Mi seriously can't explain how mi feel yah now, but mi happy bad. Dis a everything whe mi dream of and it a happen now," the up-and-coming deejay told THE STAR.

Queenie, given name Janese Espuet, said in an earlier interview that "from mi young mi wah married so mi always try not to open any umbrella in di house". On Saturday, having tied the knot, she described getting married as "the most overwhelming feeling ever".

"Mi get butterflies and, in fact, mi even get orgasms," she said.
