Clymaxx defends sexual music video
Dancehall artiste Clymaxx has sparked controversy following yesterday's release of her sexually laced music video High Tonight which shows her being sexually touched by a group of females.
The video, which was predominantly shot in a bedroom setting, showcases an all-female cast, all dressed in lingerie. The ladies grab Clymaxx's breast and throat, and show other sexual depictions as she delivers the lyrics. Among the sexual imagery is a close-up shot of an exposed nipple and what appears to be a dildo in a woman's mouth.
"The song ... is about a sexual experience while being 'high' on the regular stuff like rum, booze, weed, [and] Molly," said Clymaxx. She admitted that she expected the backlash from some viewers, but reasoned that she was only providing content that is in high demand in the dancehall space.
"The concept of the video is for shock value because it is showcasing a sexual experience among females. It's not entirely just about females but the video may give that impression. The concept was a team effort. Basically, you know how dancehall stay yah now, you have to give them something to keep them looking, as well as to highlight the fact that I am representing for everybody who considers themselves a member of the audience of dancehall," she said.
"I have seen the backlash but you done know, anuh everybody ago agree and everybody entitled to dem own opinion. Even though there are persons that are not in agreement, there are people who love it," she added. Clymaxx argued that artistes have an obligation to keep audiences satisfied and entertained.
"It is very important because at the end of the day, remember we are giving content to the audience and without the audience, our content will only exist in our minds or to ourselves and we are not singing for ourselves we are singing for the people dem," she said.
Clymaxx admitted that at first, she felt nervous during the video shoot, because it was her first time doing a video of this kind.
"This was something I was new to so I had to make an extra effort to be comfortable. But the girls were very helpful with bringing out that side of me. It was nerve-racking but eventually we fed of each others' energies," she admitted. Clymaxx also took the opportunity to clear the air on her sexuality.
"It has definitely been something I have done before in real life but it is not something I idolise or will make a permanent part of my life, because I would say currently I am still interested in men. But it wouldn't be something I would turn a blind eye to," she shared.
She also highlighted that an age restriction protocol has been included on YouTube, so it is up to parents to monitor what their children watch and are exposed to.
"So therefore, children should not be watching because of the age restriction so that cannot be something that I am blamed for," she said.
