Dancehall artiste Shokryme has changed his name to Seysoh as part of his rebranding following his return to the music space months after being released from prison.

The deejay, whose given name is Jason Pinnock, explained that the move was strategic for several reasons.

"Mainly marketing reasons, because when people hear Shokryme, me see like dem face features skin up or change. It's like dem get an impression about me just by mi name. Dem naw pree say a craft or music. From dem hear 'Kyrme', dem get turned off. But when dem hear Seysoh now, that sounds more palatable," he reasoned.

"People easily digest the new name. Kids say it, old people say it, whole heap a people call me Seysoh. Mi meds that and realise that mi need fi make the transition from mi leave from 'GP' (Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre). Mi jus say, 'Hear wah? me a go rebrand the package'. Seysoh more acceptable," he said.

He admitted that his desire for commercial success also contributed to the name change.

"If mi tell you say mainstream dominance or mainstream success was not a push factor in my name change, I would be lying because mi wah dominate a way. So mi naw mek nothing hinder mi chances," he said.

He revealed that Seysoh came about years ago when he used a slang, 'worries'.

"Mi did siddung and a say to myself, when people say 'worries' to me, mi want something else fi say to them. Somebody say 'worries', and mi say, 'Sey soh, no man', and a girl laughed, and from then mi tek on to that name," he explained.

His latest single, Rainy Weather, which was released days ago, shows his name as Seysoh.

"My new YouTube page will show Seysoh, but distribution-wise a Shokryme it under. The other thing now, those songs with the Shokryme alias will remain; me naw change dem. You haffi proud a your past, because it shape your future," he said.
