J’bonez Di Reepa thinks positive on ‘Guide My Steps’
Dancehall artiste J'bonez Di Reepa brings an uplifting message on his song, Guide My Steps.
"This song resonates with people because of the positive, uplifting message; and it is my song with the most views, currently at over 17,000 views. It's a great look; the people dem really love the message from the Reepa," he said.
Born Jovan Kevral Brown at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St James, J'bonez Di Reepa was raised by his grandmother, Evelyn Jackson, in Comfort Hall district in Trelawny after his parents separated. He relocated to St James to live with his mother at the age of 12. Soon, he discovered that he had a talent for making up jingles and poems, as well as role-playing and acting.
However, it was not until he started attending Herbert Morrison Technical High School in 2003 that his love for music developed. He joined the high school band the next year and played the clarinet. Soon after, he began practising his writing skills and lyricism to compete and freestyle with his peers, going by the name J'bonez in his district of Cotpiece, a small community in Roehampton.
In 2012, while freestyling, he came up with the 'Reepa' persona as his alter ego.
"Deep down, I feel as if there is a darkness inside just waiting on a beat to burst out, flaming with lyrics," he said.
He recorded his first single, Am a Winner, at Weddaz Productions (now named Private Muzik Records) in 2012. He started uploading songs almost every week and got active on social media.
He eventually released singles under his label, Chip Brain Reepazz Rekordz, such as Toe Curl Up and John Carter. Other songs include Back Seat and the high-energy Jump Up.
"I am going hard to make my mark in 2024 and beyond, just watch," he said.
