Pops YG finds hit with debut single
TikTok sensation-turned-dancehall artiste Pops YG is generating a big buzz with his debut song, Granny, a song that reflects society's obsession with wealth and the status it grants.
"The video is going hard online, 144,000 views and counting, since its release two weeks ago. The response from the fans has been great, crazy flames and heart emojis," Pops YG said. The song was produced by Cashment Entertainment, while the visuals were provided by Chuck Starr Visuals Team.
On Granny, Pops YG boasts, " Box a money pon the jet that's blue/one girl lef me and mi get back two."
Pops YG also drops his popular line on this song, deejaying: " We go buy back a better Benz", a slang from one of his viral TikTok videos. Given the early success of Granny, the young dancehall deejay appears to be on his way professionally, bringing his TikTok followers along for the ride.
"The fans dem love wah a gwaan, dem love the flavour and the flow," he said.
Pops YG, aka 'HomeTown Boss', first gained popularity online for his flamboyant lifestyle and catchy phrases, such as "Up inna dem hometown" and his hilarious videos on TikTok about his Benz motor vehicle, feeding his hogs with KFC chicken, and his flashy ways in rural Jamaica. Over the past year, he has amassed over 180,000 followers on TikTok and is now seeking to leverage that popularity as a deejay to become a force in dancehall circles. He first pivoted to dancehall late last year, a move which is now fuelled by the growing popularity of Granny.
Pops grew up in the community of Warsop, Trelawny, and attended Holmwood Technical High School in Manchester. He started recording songs last year. His manager, Cashment, endorsed his young charge, saying that Pops YG is a natural entertainer with his humour and "edgy dancehall personality".
