‘Y’all know music through and through’ - David Elliott praises Jamaica’s music culture after Timeless performance
The Coveside Concert - Timeless - lived up to its name with a memorable musical evening at Plantation Cove in St Ann. International superstar Dionne Warwick was the night's main attraction, but her son, David Elliott, also made an appearance on stage and managed to steal some hearts.
Elliott, a remarkable vocalist in his own right, joined his renowned mother to sing some of the crowd's favourite songs, such as That's What Friends Are For and I Say a Little Prayer.
Elliott's profound respect for Jamaica and its people was evident despite his outstanding performance. After the performance, THE STAR spoke with him to find out what he thought of the occasion and his connection to the island.
"Jamaica is Jamaica," Elliott said, a broad smile lighting up his face. "I know that Bob is the man in Jamaica, right? But besides Bob being the absolute genius and everything, the people here, the love--man, it's beautiful! Loving, friendly, welcoming, you know?"
"And then, to top it off, music lovers. People from Jamaica are music connoisseurs. Y'all know what's up. Y'all know music through and through. So, as a musician, it's fun to come to a place where people appreciate what you do because they truly understand it," Elliott said.
The gifted vocalist was quick to praise his mother when he was questioned about her performance.
"She is so consistent, and she is going to hit it out of the park every time," he said proudly. "I mean, she's been doing this before I was even a thought, and I'm 56. So she's been doing it a long time."
What makes Dionne Warwick's performances so magical, according to Elliott, is her unique connection with the audience.
"The key really that I think a lot of people don't see, is that, with her, she feeds off the crowd.
So for her whole career, the crowd's giving love and adulation, she's gonna give it back in the form of her instrument. So that was a great performance. It's not just about the singer.
It's about the crowd and the interaction between both," he explained.
For those who were captivated by Elliott's voice at Timeless, there is good news--his journey continues with an exciting family tour.
"We're actually getting ready to start a pretty big tour," he revealed. "Next week, we head over to Europe. We're doing a show with my brother, Damon Elliott, and of course, my mother, Dionne. It's a real family show. So we're gonna go over to Europe and I think we have 14 or 18 shows something like that. It's a completely different show from this one, it will be all over Europe and the UK."
With a night filled with joy, nostalgia, and unadulterated musical beauty, Timeless came to a close. It was a night that celebrated the beauty of classical music, with timeless performers like Myrna Hague, Marcia Griffiths, and Duane Stephenson giving mesmerising performances and David Elliott carrying on the Warwick tradition with soul and passion.
