No motive in tourist killing

The Westmorland police say they have not yet established a motive for Friday's killing of Canadian tourist Dennis Palakai, 35, during a robbery in West End, Negril. Head of the division, Senior Superintendent David White, said police commissioner Dr Carl Williams will provide a comprehensive statement today.

Police reported that Palakai was with a relative and a female companion about 9 p.m., when two gunmen drove up on a motorcycle and opened fire hitting him.

White said since January they have been tough on motorcyclists in Westmoreland, where about 600 motorcycles were seized.

"Two things why we target bikes: they account for most fatal accidents as it relates to motorcycles last year, and since the start of the year we started to remove them for their use in illegality," he said, adding that the motorcycles are not licensed and are owned by lottery scammers, who just buy new ones.

"We will intensify the operations even more. We started even yesterday (Saturday) morning and will carry through to the end of the week," he said.
