Tommy Lee's lawyer blasts cops - Artiste has until today to report to police

Ernest Smith, the attorney representing dancehall artiste Tommy Lee Sparta, has labelled the police as irresponsible after his client was named as a person of interest last Thursday.

"It is a most irresponsible action on the part of the police," Smith told The Star. "I don't understand why the police would want to literally slander this man in the height of his career."

The Elletson Road police said the Uncle Demon deejay is wanted for questioning in relation to a shooting that took place on Saunders Avenue in East Kingston, and asked him to report to them on or before today. The police did not give any further details on the shooting.

Up to late last night, the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Corporate Communications Unit said the artiste, born Leroy Russell, had not reported to the police.

Smith said since the announcement, some promoters have been calling to make sure their investment in the artiste is not in trouble.

"If it is, the persons who have already deposited money for him to tour, ask for a recall or cancel the tour. Somebody's gonna have to pay," Smith argued, revealing the artiste plans to tour Europe, Africa and South America. "I can understand when you try to get in touch with somebody and the person's whereabouts are unknown. I can understand when efforts have been made to contact somebody and those efforts have been futile. Why couldn't they get in touch with any one of us, or even try to locate or get in touch with him? They know where he lives!"
