Woman beaten by police urged to press charges

The woman who was seen on a now viral video being violently handled by police officers in Gordon Town, St Andrew recently, was advised to press charges against the officers when she appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Friday.
Yanique Campbell, a 26-year-old production worker of Gordon Town, appeared in court on August 26 in relation to the incident, which occurred on July 23. She is charged with indecent language, assault occasioning bodily harm, abusive language, resisting arrest, and unlawful wounding. She entered a not guilty plea.
TEARFUL APPEAL
In court on Friday, Campbell made a tearful appeal to Senior Parish Judge, Judith Pusey, who listened to her account of what transpired.
“I was brutally abused, Your Honour, and I want you to hear me out,” she started.
“I was coming down in a taxi, and when it let me off, I walked past the three officers and hail them up. When I reached further down, one of them called me, and I turned back to go to him. On my way, me hear him say something that was so indecent, I don’t know if I can say it to you.”
“So, I respond to him [in a similar way], and he grabbed me and start beat me. I realised that he was not trying to arrest me, he was fighting me, so I fight him back,” she told the court.
Upon listening to the accused, Judge Pusey admitted, “I think you were badly treated.”
She further advised the woman to obtain a medical certificate to outline the injuries she sustained, so that her claims against the lawmen can be substantiated.
The matter is to be mentioned again on October 24, when the said medical report is expected to be ready.
