Bike thief gets nine months behind bars

A young man who was caught stealing a delivery man's bike was slapped with a nine month prison sentence when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court yesterday.

Twenty-three-year-old Trevin Barrett pleaded guilty to the charge of larceny of a motor vehicle. The court heard that on the day of the incident, the complainant, who is a delivery man, parked his motorbike on Slipe Road, St Andrew, and went into Courts to conduct business.

Pleaded for leniency

Upon exiting the business place, the complainant saw Barrett going down the road with his motorcycle. He, along with a police officer, gave chase and caught the culprit.

When asked why he should not go to prison for his crime, Barrett pleaded for leniency.

"I'm sorry. A the first me a do something like this. Me just a ask you kindly to make things work out fi me," he said.

Upon handing down the nine-month prison sentence with a finger print order, presiding judge Judith Pusey admonished Barrett.

"Bike is not food. You can't just go around teefing people things. If the police didn't catch you, the man would be out of a job," she said.
