Albert George market to get facelift

Mayor of Falmouth and chairman of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation, Colin Gager, said the Albert George Market will soon be transformed into a destination in keeping with global standards.

According to Gager, the present conditions are not very suitable to accommodate visitors who come to the town.

"What is going on there is not appealing to prospective tourists. We have decided to repair the floors, establish attractive shops and a state-of-the-art restaurant, where guests can feel comfortable dining in comfort," he said.

The Albert George Market is located in Water Square in Falmouth and was built in 1894. Over the years, it has had several transformations.

In the early years, the facility hosted the freed slaves who came into the town to barter their farm products. Later, it became an open market for foods of all kind and even had meat stalls selling mainly beef, pork and mutton.

Florence Logan, who operates one of the shops in the present market, welcomed the refurbishing but said there are still some unanswered questions relating to the project.

"It should have happened long ago. However, there is a lack of information. We don't know how long the refurbishing is going to take. What are we to do with our stock?" she said.

Without addressing the time frame from commencement to completion, Gager said, "The present shop operators have nothing to fear. They will be the first to be offered business places in the refurbished market."
