Promising youngster receives glowing tributes

Winston Cleve Haye was welcomed into the world by his parents, Marlene Wright and Winston Haye, on August 31, 1997, and it was like euphoria sent from the football gods.

Jamaica had just qualified for the 1998 World Cup in France, and that combination of a son being born and the country qualifying for football's greatest show was all Winston Sr spoke about.

Sadly though in this another World Cup year, Winston Jr, popularly called Tunky, left this world. He died on February 22, 2018.

At the funeral that was held at the Spring Garden Seventh-day Adventist Church in Trelawny last Sunday, he was remembered by many who spoke glowingly about the type of youngster he was.

In one tribute by his uncle, Victor Wright, he was described as "special, wonderful, endearing, charming and one who had a passion for life."

Tunky also loved the Cockpit Country and could often be found enjoying the beauty which can be found nowhere else but in Spring Garden or Rock Spring in southern Trelawny.

A graduate of Knox College, he started his degree in public health at the University of Technology and was months away from graduating when he became ill with a kidney disease from which he never recovered.

Another uncle, Linvern Wright, in delivering the eulogy, spoke of Winston Jr's wit. "He was tenacious, loved his sister, Whitney, of whom he was very protective. His brother, Davion, was held in high regard, and they were inseparably close," he said.

Pastor Trevor Reid delivered the sermon in which he reminded the present and past students of the institutions to "make it right with God. You are never too young to die. Winston here is testimony to that."

Winston Jr's body was buried in the family plot in Rock Spring.
