The Trelawny branch of the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA) has launched a quiz competition for primary schools in Trelawny that has attracted sponsorship of approximately $30 million over the next five years.

Some 34 schools have registered for the four-week contest, which is scheduled to begin on April 16.

"We intend to expose students and increase their reading readiness and let them become more aware of the culture and history of Trelawny," said Phillip Chong, president of the JGRA at the launch at the William Knibb Memorial Baptist Church.

"We must help to develop a generation of leaders and thinkers," he added. "Use this competition as a catalyst going forward."

The competition is being held under the theme 'Branding the Future for Tomorrow's Children' and is the brainchild of Dowen Virgo, chairman of the organising committee.

Karlene Segree of the Ministry of Education's Region Three office commended the eight other firms that have thrown their support behind the initiative.

"It will raise the academic standard of the students. They will read more and ... to do scholarly researches, which are attributes appropriate on the pathway of success," she said.
