Athlete murdered at home

The local track and field fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of 400-metre runner and former Calabar High School athlete, 25-year-old Kavon Nelson.

Nelson was killed by gunmen early yesterday morning at his home on Macville Terrace, Kingston 19.

He was a member of the Michael Clarke-led Akan Track Club at the time of his death.

Clarke told THE STAR, "Kavon is a youngster who loved track and field. He has been with the club for five to six years. He loved track and field and was full of life. It's quite unfortunate his life ended the way it did. He was so young and promising."

Reports from the police are that at about 12:30 a.m., Nelson was at home when men entered his home and opened fire.

When the police arrived at the scene, Nelson was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The St Andrew North police say no motive has yet been established.

Nelson represented Jamaica at the North American, Central American and Caribbean under-23 championships in 2014.

Olympian, World Championship medallist and training partner Javon Francis, also took to social media site Facebook to express his grief at Nelson's passing.

His post read, "RIP to my best friend, otherwise my training partner. I never know this day would come. You are a brother to me and someone who love and care but I just want to say I love you from the bottom of my heart, you will still be in my heart bro."
