Close to 2,000 homeless, mentally ill and shut-ins across the island were treated last week in a major charity initiative, which was put on by the Shena Carty Foundation of Love.

The project, which was in its fourth year, took place on Heroes Day, Monday, October 15, and involved more than 120 volunteers in all 14 parishes.

"In actuality, we fed 1,970 people, which is just 70 people short of last year's target but is nonetheless a huge success for everyone involved," said Carty, who spearheaded the initiative

"We have to do this and people feel the need to do it. It is a unique event because we do it on Heroes Day, and it's normally a day [when] people stay home with their family and friends, yet we had so many people coming out to help the less fortunate," she added.

She noted that her organisation worked with several local and international stakeholders to raise funds for the event.

"The plan was to raise enough money so as to possibly help fix a home for an elderly person, but we fell short of that target. However, what we're able to do, the people were grateful," Carty said.
