Canadian drug smuggler gets two years

A Canadian man who appeared before the St. James Parish Court for sentencing in relation to drug charges on Tuesday, was sentenced to two-year imprisonment.

The man, John Edwards, was arrested in September 2017 by the Narcotics Police when he was caught attempting to export 20 pounds of cocaine to Canada.

In addition to the mandatory term of imprisonment, Edwards was also fined one million dollars or six months imprisonment for possession of cocaine, and two million dollars or six months for attempting to export cocaine.

The sentences are to run consecutively to the mandatory sentence if the fines are not paid.
