The St James police have named a 24-year-old man as a person of interest in the shooting and wounding of a constable, following the lawman's involvement in a motor vehicle accident in the parish yesterday morning.

The man has been identified as Travis Malcolm, otherwise called 'Tippa', of a Porto Bello address also in St James. He is being sought in connection with the shooting of Constable Kashene Peterkin.

Woman Sergeant Ulette Green said the police are asking Malcolm to turn himself in to the nearest police station by noon today.

"Malcolm is being sought as a person of interest and we are asking anyone with information that could assist the police with his whereabouts, to immediately contact the Freeport CIB," Green said.

Reports by the Freeport police are that about 2:55 a.m. on Sunday, Peterkin was driving towards his home in his private motor car.

On reaching a section of the Porto Bello main road, his vehicle got involved in a minor accident with another vehicle.

The lawman stepped from his vehicle to address the situation and he was immediately fired upon by armed men, who opened fire hitting him multiple times in his upper body.

Peterkin managed to return the fire, and as his assailants took cover, he managed to escape the scene. He was later assisted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital by another motorist.
