York Town youth move to ‘Bring back the love’

Determined not to allow crime and violence to take hold in their community, a group of persons from York Town in Clarendon recently staged a football competition, which they hope will lead to better interactions among community members.

Staged under the theme, 'Bring back the love and fun to the community', the league concluded on Sunday with Young Blood emerging winners following a penalty shoot-out with Barber. Young Blood's Logan Mullings was named the Most Valuable Player.

Sheral Morgan, co-planner of the competition, told CENTRAL STAR about the reason behind its staging.

"We want peace and unity in the community again so we decided to do this event, where people come together and form their teams."

Morgan, along with Christopher Graham, Chevoi Jennings and Mark Smith, all residents of Howells Content in York Town, were the engine and funders behind the event.

GOOD INITIATIVE

Gaston Thomas, a justice of the peace, describes the competition as a good initiative.

"When they told me they wanted to start a football competition, I was in full support. Sports is the vehicle that unite the youth so I said this is a chance to get all the youth together," he said.

"On the field, people are here from Bullard, St Andrew, and Settlement. It brings out people from other district into Howells Content and this is a part of unity, because these are communities that were at war before. "

Gary Forbes, the league's president, said "This is something special for Howells Content, knowing that the York Town community has been plagued with a lot of negative vibes and violence. The unity is the best part."
