Two men killed in same lane days apart

The community of Hopewell in Hanover has been sent into a frenzy following the murder of two men, who were both shot and killed by a lone gunman just days apart, at the same location in the town square.

Damion Buchanan, a 28-year-old labourer of Camp Road, and 29-year-old Sheldon Hinds, labourer of Rock Top, both in Hopewell, were killed on Sunday night and Wednesday night, respectively.

Buchanan was killed by a lone gunman at approximately 9:30 p.m., while Hinds was killed by another lone gunman in the vicinity, where a candlelight vigil was being held for Buchanan shortly after 9 p.m.

The Sandy Bay police report that in the first incident, Buchanan was sitting at a stall in the vicinity of Bakery Lane when he was approached by a man who brandished a handgun and opened fire, hitting him in his upper back.

The gunman made his escape by foot. The police were summoned and upon arrival, Buchanan was rushed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Then, on Wednesday night, during the candlelight vigil, a lone gunman struck again, shooting Hinds, who was at a bar at the entrance to Bakery Lane.

The Sandy Bay police were once again called, and found Hinds, who was suffering from gunshot wounds. He was also rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"These random shootings have got out of hand in Hopewell and we will be coming down very hard on persons who are suspected to be involved in any of these killings," one officer told THE WEEKEND STAR. "Two murders, at the same spot, have portrayed a bad image for Hopewell, and the police will now have to step up their presence and patrols in the area."

The officer said that more police would be deployed in Hopewell, "and (we) will also have to give the area our full attention in order to avoid any form of reprisals, or any more of these senseless killings."

The police source said that they were following some strong leads, "and we hope to have some suspects into custody in short order".

These two latest killings have taken the number of persons murdered in Hanover since the start of the year to four.
