Children killer gets life imprisonment

June 29, 2020

Jason Grey, a 26-year-old tattoo artist of Hague Settlement, in Trelawny, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of two St James children when he appeared in the Duncans Circuit Court on Friday.

He will be eligible for parole after serving 29 years.

Grey pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and abduction, in the case of 10-year-old Melica 'Jody' Mitchell and 12-year-old Omari 'Mari' Sterling, on July 13, 2014. Reports are that both children, who attended the Albion Primary School in Montego Bay, had accompanied other family members to a section of Dump Up Beach.

The children were approached by Grey, who lured them away from the crowd by telling them that he was going to treat them at a nearby fast-food outlet. He took Omari and Melica away in his motor car, and they were not seen or heard from again until their bodies were discovered in the Martha Brae River in Trelawny two days later.

Devona Kerr, Melica's mother told, THE STAR that she would have preferred the death sentence but she is very pleased with the ruling handed down by the court.
