Adjusted COVID curfew hours announced for four parishes, Gov't to make decision on reopening of schools
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding the date that has been set for the reopening of schools.
Last month, the Ministry of Education said schools would reopen in phases as of September 7, 2020.
This announcement follows the country’s recording of 98 positive cases, and an additional death in 24 hours.
“We have had to reflect as to whether or not the date set for the reopening of school should be adjusted. We have not made a decision as yet. The Minister of Education will at a later stage, make the required announcement of the decisions. They are in consultation as we speak,” Holness said.
Meanwhile, the prime minister says the cabinet met earlier today and decided on additional measures to curtail the spread of COVID-19.
Curfew hours for the parishes of Kingston, St Andrew, St. Catherine and Clarendon have been tightened.
Effective Saturday, August 22, 2020 to Wednesday, September 2, 2020, the curfew will run from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The regular island-wide curfew hours remain from 11p.m. to 5a.m. daily for all other parishes.
Holness assured Jamaicans that there is no need for panic.
“I quite well know and understand that most Jamaicans would see this as cause for panic. I would say yes, it is a cause for serious concern, but not a cause of panic,” Holness said, noting that he expected an in increase in the number of positive cases after the reopening of the country’s borders and the
economy.
Desmond McKenzie, minister of local government said he will also be monitoring beaches, water parks and other attractions within the four parishes.
