Dr Peter Phillips to demit office
President of the People's National Party (PNP), Dr Peter Phillips, has indicated that he will resign as party head and Opposition Leader as soon as possible.
Phillips says he has written to the party chairman, Fitz Jackson, advising him on his intentions.
Dr Phillips made the announcement at a PNP press conference held at their Old Hope Road headquarters earlier today.
"I intend, until a new leader is elected to exercise all responsibilities that is attached to the office of president of the People's National Party," Phillips said.
Yesterday, Phillips stated that he would step down as party president if the PNP lost the general election. The PNP suffered a massive defeat, winning only 14 seats. The Jamaica Labour Party took 49.
Phillips has become the only president of the 82-year-old party to have been denied the opportunity of leading the country.
