Bad weather impacting garbage collection
Jamaicans have been told to expect further delays in their garbage and recycling collection islandwide in the coming week.
Audley Gordon, the executive director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, said that the prevailing weather conditions have caused challenging conditions at its disposal facilities across the island, resulting in extended vehicle turnaround times.
"Over the past few weeks, the weather has caused severe setback in our operations. As it intensifies, we can foresee further delays over the next few days. The heavy rains have resulted in damaged roadways, landslides, and soil erosion," Gordon noted.
He said that every effort will be made to ensure "prompt collection as soon as the rain subsides".
Householders are being encouraged to properly bag and secure their garbage until they are collected.
