124 children still missing

November 25, 2020

Some 124 children of those who were reported missing between January and June this year, have still not returned home.

Education Minister Fayval Williams, in making the announcement yesterday, said that 545 reports of missing children were received between January and June 2020, down from 868 over the corresponding period last year.

"A reason proffered for this reduction is that our children are at home as a result of the pandemic," Williams said in Parliament. "Many of our children are reported missing when they are away from their homes and are on our roads."

Empower parents

Opposition Spokesperson on Education Angela Brown Burke said that it is important to empower parents with information about how to reduce the incidence of children going missing.

She recalled a study that found that children who are part of uniformed groups, or whose friends are known to their parents, are less likely to go missing.

"I believe we need to identify these factors and promote them in our schools, our churches, our PTAs, and so on, so that our parents are aware of the circumstances that make their children less vulnerable," Brown Burke said.
