T&T PM blasts selfish partygoers

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley on Tuesday severely criticised persons who have been staging parties and other gatherings despite efforts by his administration to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic that has killed 115 and infected nearly 6,000 persons in Trinidad and Tobago.

"I must say I am amazed that some people in our national population could be so cavalier and irresponsible and selfish that after January to November, being told about how dangerous this thing is, and why we need to be going through what we are going through to evade its worst fangs, and all these people want to do is party," Rowley said.

"I want to say to the national population again, we are not immune to what is happening to other people around the world. This virus is no respector of gender, of race, of class or economic standing. Do not play Russian roulette with it," Rowley added.

Barbados to issue COVID coin

The Central Bank of Barbados says it will pay tribute to the island's essential workers who have been treating persons and helping to curb the spread of COVID-19 with a limited-edition circulation coin.

"Like so many Barbadians, we are very appreciative of the commitment that our essential workers have shown throughout this pandemic," said Octavia Gibson, deputy director of the bank's Currency Division.

"We believe that using this coin, a circulation coin, but one that really stands out, to honour people from all sectors who have been on the front lines is truly fitting.

"We are excited about this coin, and happy that we are able to use it to celebrate Barbados' essential workers. We hope everyone will watch the launch, and then, after the coins go into circulation, collect them as keepsakes," she added.
