Lawman dies in motor vehicle crash
Chairman of the Police Federation, Corporal Rohan James, said the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has got very little respite from grief this year after the death of another lawman yesterday.
James was speaking to THE WEEKEND STAR after the passing of Constable Fabian Morrison, who was hit from his motorcycle close to the entrance of the Jamaica Defence Force Up Park Camp in St Andrew.
"I know that we have lost quite a few officers even in recent weeks from natural causes and although I do not have the statistics at hand, I know that we have been attending funeral week after week. Even though it is COVID period, we are still encountering losses," he said.
Time be extremely careful
"We are all hurting and I want to say to my colleagues that it is not going to be business as usual and we have to ensure that we do our work and at the same time be extremely careful and alert," he added.
Morrison, 24, who was attached to the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) at Elletson Road Police Station in Kingston, had been a member of the JCF for little over two years. James said he had known Morrison since he was a trainee and believes he would have been a phenomenal cop.
"His development to me was paramount and I just want to take the opportunity to extend, on behalf of the JCF, condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr Morrison. Even though we are grieving at this time, I want to reassure them that we will be standing in the gap for them and we are all in this together," he said.
Reports indicate that about 8:10 a.m. Morrison was driving a police service motorcycle in a westerly direction when on reaching the intersection of Arnold and Camp roads, a female motorist turned suddenly into his path resulting in a collision. Morrison was flung from the motorcycle and received multiple injuries. A team of JDF paramedics assisted him to the Kingston Public Hospital where he died while being treated.
