Cops hold suspect in homeless men attacks

Prime Minister Andrew Holness yesterday told Parliament that the police had a suspect in custody in connection with one of the attacks on homeless men across the Corporate Area on Sunday.

"They (police) do have a suspect, with strong evidence, in their custody," Holness said, referring to the murder of three of the homeless men in Central Kingston. The men were found in the vicinity of the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court (Civil Division) on Sutton Street. The other attacks happened on Spanish Town Road and in Half-Way Tree in St Andrew.

Holness also told the House of Representatives that the man who the police picked up is a deportee.

Earlier, he had promised that the Government has been working to address the issue of homelessness in Jamaica, particularly in downtown Kingston.

The prime minister estimates that approximately 2,000 homeless persons are on the streets islandwide.
