Jamaica surpasses 17,000 confirmed COVID cases

Confrimed COVID-19 cases in Jamaica have surpassed the 17,000 mark, as the country continues to grapple with a steady rise in new infections.

Of the 1,408 samples tested in the last 24 hours, 244 returned positive results increasing total confirmed cases to 17,085 with 4,271 active.

Of the new cases, 98 are males and 146 are females, with ages ranging from 4 months to 92 years.

Kingston and St. Andrew recorded the most new cases with 58, followed by Manchester with 32, and St James and Trelawny each with 26.

Portland with two, and St Elizabeth with one, were the parishes with the least amount of cases.

In the meantime, 46 more persons have recovered for a total of 12,271.

Some 149 persons are hospitalised with 10 being moderately and 15 critically ill.

According to the Ministry of Health, 10 persons are in government quarantine, while 18,979 are quarantined at home.

Meanwhile, a 58-year-old male from Kingston & St.  Andrew is the latest Jamaican to die from the virus, increasing the death tally to 358.
