A former police sergeant died from injuries he sustained in a bloody motor vehicle crash on a section of the Barham main road in Westmoreland on Wednesday afternoon.

He has been identified as 48-year-old Christopher McDaniel, of Whitehouse, in the parish. Reports are that about 4:20 p.m., McDaniel was driving a storage truck when another truck which was laden with sugar cane overturned as the driver negotiated a corner. The sugar cane fell on McDaniel's vehicle, crushing him in the cabin area. The police were summoned to the scene where McDaniel was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His body was then transported to the morgue. The driver of the other truck has been identified as Alrick Knight, 65, of Rasberry Close in Mandeville, Manchester. He was taken into custody.

Statistics from the Road Safety Unit are that as of February 11, 51 persons have been killed from 46 crashes.
