Kari Douglas pleads not guilty to assault charge, bail extended
Kari Douglas, Jamaica Labour Party councillor for the Trafalgar division in St Andrew, pleaded not guilty to the charges of assaulting a police officer and obstructing the police when she appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court this morning.
Douglas is accused of hitting a policeman at the back of his neck and blocking the arrest of an individual who was allegedly breaching COVID-19 curfew orders.
She was represented by attorney-at-law Samoi Campbell who was standing in for Peter Champagnie, Q.C.
Douglas' bail was extended until May 20 when the matter will again be mentioned.
According to the allegations, about 8:30 p.m on February 26, the police were attempting to disperse a gathering in the Swallowfield community when Douglas allegedly used her vehicle to block the cops who were arresting an alleged offender.
It is also alleged that Douglas, who tried to persuade the police not arrest the alleged offender, hit one of the policemen.
Following the incident, she turned up at the Stadium Police where she was arrested and charged and later granted bail.
