A 56-year-old widow is tired of being alone and is now on a quest to find herself a soulmate. Claudette Kennedy, a resident of Sunning Hill, St Thomas, said her husband passed five years ago.

Kennedy, whose children are all adults, said that her only stipulation is that the man be within her age group, or older, as she is not interested in younger men. She told THE STAR that she has encountered quite a few cat-calls from much younger guys, but she is far from interested.

Husband's death

A further probe into her request revealed a sad reality that she has been grappling with for the past few years. Kennedy, who was married for more than 30 years, said that they were living in a rented house with their six children at the time of her husband's death.

"The landlady gave me notice to leave and came with police and bailiff. Dem start put mi things dem outside and pull down a shop I had on the property, plug out the fridge and everything," she said pointing at an old refrigerator at the side of her sister's house where she now lives.

Kennedy revealed that she had secured a job as a domestic helper in Kingston, but was laid off last year as her employer expressed fear of contracting COVID-19. Noting that her call for a partner is more of a cry for help, she said she has hopes to build a home for herself.

"I went on my father land and dig out the foundation to start something. I even bought some material but see dem there a gather mud. I don't have any help. I can't get no work no matter what I do and I cannot help myself. My last son is 14 and was with me here, but I had to send him to his big brother to live because I can't feed him," she said. "I can't make up the house because I don't have the money. My children don't have it either so I am looking for somebody to stand beside me to help me."

Kennedy said that she needs blocks, cement and steel.

Kennedy's sister Ioline pointed out that she can't afford to refurbish her sibling's current home.

"She really need the help man, both of us, 'cause I don't have a man either. But one of my eyes gone and no man nuh want no one eye woman," she laughed.
