National midfielder Leon Bailey's best statistical Bundesliga league season has earned him a nomination for the Bundesliga team of the season.

Bailey, 23, is among 10 attackers who have been shortlisted, which include Bayern Munich players Serge Gnarby and the league's leading goalscorer Robert Lewandoski, and Dortmund's Erling Haaland.

In his fourth full season with Bayer Leverkusen, Bailey has scored nine goals and registered nine assists in 29 league appearances, and currently has the second-highest goal total on the team. He played a key role in Leverkusen's 12-match unbeaten start to the season, where he scored four goals and registered five assists during that span.

Additionally, Bailey has had his best overall statistical season this year with Leverkusen, scoring 15 goals and registering 11 assists, surpassing his 12 goals and six assists numbers that he posted during the 2017/2018 season. His improved numbers come from his performance in Leverkusen's Europa League campaign in which he had five goals and two assists.

His performances in the Bundesliga this year also include him winning the December Goal of the Month award for his long-range curling effort against Hoffenheim on December 13.

Bailey has not let the departure of manager Peter Bosz from the club affect his performance as he has managed to score three goals in the five games after his sacking in late March. Leverkusen are currently in sixth place with 50 points, six points adrift from the Champions League places with four matches remaining. They will travel to Werder Bremen this Saturday looking for a win to keep their faint hopes of a place in Europe next season alive.
