May 18, 2021

An 18-year-old was fined $30,000 for breaches under the Disaster Risk Management Act.

Oneika Campbell pleaded guilty to the offence when she appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court yesterday.

The court heard that about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, police saw a group of people gathered along the roadway. The curfew started at 2 p.m. They said the persons ran in various directions as they approached, and Campbell was held on the road. It is alleged that when she was held by the police, she said "And me just come out, enuh."

In her explanation, she argued that the police told her they would make an example out of her. The police seh to me 'who run come in?' and me seh me nuh see nobody so them ago make an example out of me and lock me up," Campbell said.

Senior Parish Court Judge Lori-Ann Cole-Montague imposed a fine of $30,000 or six-months imprisonment.
