23 killed in road crashes since January

Twenty-three people have been killed in road crashes in the first 17 days of the year.

That is one more than that the tally for the comparative period of 2021.

The Road Safety Unit in the Transport Ministry says six private motor vehicle drivers, six motorcyclists and five pedestrians and were among the fatalities.

Meanwhile, the Transport Ministry is reporting a 71 per cent drop in fatalities during curfew hours compared to the similar period last year.

The Road Safety Unit in the Transport Ministry is renewing calls for road users to be cautious on the roads. 

Last year, there were 484 road fatalities, one of the highest figures ever recorded.  

The unit says drivers failing to keep left and pedestrian error were the main causes of those fatal crashes.  

Last year, 128 motorists died because of excessive speeding.
