Weed found in cheese tins

January 27, 2022

A social enquiry report was requested for a woman who is before the courts answering to drug-related offences.

Aneita Grant, 61, pleaded guilty to possession of, dealing in and attempting to export ganja when she appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court yesterday. She is also charged with conspiracy to export ganja, to which she maintained a not guilty plea.

The court heard that on April 1, 2020 at 5:20 p.m., Grant went to an overseas courier service, attempting to ship a package to Canada. The package contained five Easter buns, two bags of bulla cakes and two tins of cheese.

While doing security checks, the cheese tins were found to contain vegetable matter resembling ganja. The substance was said to weigh six pounds. It is reported that investigators visited Grant's home on December 28, 2021 where she was arrested and charged. On caution, the dressmaker said she was not aware that the carton had ganja and that it was a friend who asked her to ship the package.

When investigators asked her the reason why the friend did not have other relatives ship the package for him, Grant responded "Him always a say him nuh trust him daughter."

The defendant is currently on bail with a surety in the sum of $400,000. Chief Parish Judge Chester Crooks requested a social enquiry report in the matter.

Grant has been ordered fingerprinted. She was also instructed to surrender her travel documents. She is to return to court on April 1 for sentencing.
