‘Garvey Gems’ to launch today
The Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JAD), through its social enterprise JAD Binders, will today launch ' Garvey Gems', a journal which consists of memorable quotes used by Jamaica's first National Hero Marcus Garvey, who advocated for those who are marginalised.
The timing of the launch is considered fitting as The Disabilities Act came into effect earlier in the month. This Friday will also be celebrated as Jamaica Day. Denise Badroe, director, business development division at the JAD, said that Garvey Gems pays homage to Garvey with a select few of his timeless quotes taken from the book, The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey, which was compiled by Amy Jacques Garvey.
"It is inspirational and is expected to have a wide appeal as it utilises quotes by Garvey to which everyone can relate," Badroe said. She said that the JAD was thrilled to announce the new journal on Jamaica Day, a day for all Jamaicans, which falls within Black History Month.
President of the Universal Negro Improvement Association-African Communities League Jamaica, Stephen Golding, described the launch of the journal as a fitting tribute to Garvey.
"In the 135th year since his birth and 100 years after he was falsely charged by the United States federal government, we congratulate JAD Binders on celebrating his life and teachings in the publication of their third journal ... ," said Golding.
JAD Binders creates journals and other items for sale, the proceeds from which help to provide education and employment opportunities within the deaf community.
