“The walk to Poland was very very scary, and tiring…It was really cold,” recalled Rhonda-Kaye Trought, one of the 20 students who arrived from Russian-invaded Ukraine yesterday.

Trought, who was one of the students who fell ill, recalled the difficulty of having to walk 20 kilometres from L'viv to the Polish border after roadblocks prevented travelling by bus.

“It was really cold, we just had to help bear each other up, that is all we could do,” she said.

The students were met at the Polish border by Jamaica's charge d'affaires Deniese Sealey who tended to the group’s immediate needs and arranged travel to Germany.

They arrived at the Donald Sangster International Airport last night where State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Leslie Campbell greeted them.

“Thank God for my friends, and all the Jamaicans who assisted us along the way; we are really glad to be home,” Trought added.
