David Sanko is Gimme-Me-Bit’s ‘Mr Helpful’
Ask any random person in Gimmi-Me-Bit in Clarendon for David Sanko, and it is highly likely that they will know him.
For about 40 years, Sanko has been going the extra mile to assist persons who are in need of help, in whatever way, and says that he keeps going because of the pleasure and satisfaction he derives from being his brother's keeper.
Whether he is taking up the shovel and assisting at gravedigging, doing fundraising to assist with funeral expenses, or just giving a shoulder to cry on, Sanko has been an ever-present figure in the community. He also plays the role of chef and even MC when residents are hosting birthday parties and other get-togethers including weddings. He said that his passion to give assistance started when he was a youngster, watching seniors in the district help others.
"I said I am going to be that one to come around and to help somebody and I grow up with that helping hand," he said. In the area of mentorship, he said he makes himself available for those who need someone to talk to.
"Sometimes it's just about cheering them up, listening and allowing them to talk. Most times by just talking they end up feeling better," he said.
Sanko also shared that his group sometimes arranges impromptu treats for children in the community. Stating that he sometimes has his own challenges with resources, he said he would not change a thing regarding the way he chooses to live his life.
"We are living in a time [in which] if you don't give, you don't get. Some of the people, because they are not getting any money, they don't give a helping hand. But money is not all. To me, when I give to others, God blesses me in so many ways that I can't imagine. And so by them not giving anything, that is not a problem to me. I give because I know the good Lord would want me to do that and I follow in his example and I help," he said.
Sanko, who has five children, said he is already teaching them the same principles and ensuring that the older ones accompany him when he goes on his volunteer missions.
President of the Gimmi-Me-Bit Community Development Committee, Leroy Richards, described Sanko as a community person on whom everyone could rely. Richards, who has known Sanko from birth, said that he has had the same helpful attitude the whole time.
"He doesn't complain and never puts a price tag on his services. He is just an all-round good guy," said Richards.
